THE RIOT GRRRL ON MARS

FEB. 13, 2026 • 7:30PM
FEB. 16, 2026 • 4PM

Music by Gioachino Rossini • Italian libretto by Angelo Anelli • English adaptation by David Scott Marley • Recitatives by Jonathan Khuner, after Rossini

“David Scott Marley's wonderful English-language adaptation of Rossini's "Italian Girl in Algiers," manages the neat double trick of being both faithful to the original and hugely entertaining to boot -- which is to say, faithful to the original.” – San Francisco Chronicle

The King of Mars has a fascination with all things human and a desire for a new Earthling queen. His search is made more enticing with the capture of Mosquito, who was captured along with the Professor on an expedition from Earth to explore the red planet. The Riot Grrrl, coming to rescue her beloved Mosquito, crash-lands and is also captured. Is she the human bride the King craves, or will her disruptive Riot ways spell the end to his rule over the Martians?

HOT’s General Director Andrew Morgan marks his directorial debut with the company, partnering with Principal Guest Conductor Elizabeth Askren and a cast of up-and-coming singers alongside beloved returning artists.

A STAGED CONCERT

NEAL S. BLAISDELL CONCERT HALL

The season concludes with Bizet’s smoldering tale of seduction and addiction, Carmen, filled with some of opera’s most beloved melodies. Not a soul can resist Carmen’s seductive charm, not even the naïve Don José, who abandons his childhood sweetheart and his military career to follow her. But Carmen is a fiery gypsy with an appetite for smuggling and for powerful men. When she abandons him for a charismatic bullfighter, Don José’s infatuation turns to murderous obsession. What fate, or choice, waits for the woman no man can tame?

A dramatic staged concert phenomenon, featuring an on-stage orchestra, gripping character portrayals, and elaborate costumes revived from HOT’s 2017 production.
Don’t miss Carmen at the newly renovated Blaisdell Concert Hall!

Stuck Elevator tells the story of a Chinese food deliveryman struggling for freedom from debt, human smugglers, loud-mouth coworkers, and the temptations of General Tso. Based on the true story of an undocumented immigrant who survived 81 hours (about 3 and a half days) in a Bronx elevator, this comic-rap-scrap-metal-opera shows increasingly fantastical attempts to escape being trapped in America. Stuck Elevator provides a personal entry point to thinking about and discussing topics that include immigration, labor, China, family obligation, and fortune cookies for an undocumented immigrant and indentured slave in 21st century America.
