Don Carlo

by Giuseppe Verdi

Cast & Production

For the first time in HOT’s nearly 50-year history, Don Carlo took the stage for a truly monumental production in spectacular style. It premiered new sets and costumes for an international co-production of Don Carlo with several opera companies:  Opera Hong Kong, Vancouver Opera and the Florentine Opera. It was the first time the United States, China and Canada joined in an artistic endeavor of this magnitude.

“The enormous resources for scenic spectacle, as well as the expanded forces needed for chorus and costumes, are often too overwhelming for regional theatres,” said Henry Akina, HOT’s General and Artistic Director, who directed the production. “HOT’s expansion into this challenging large-scale repertoire was very exciting. We were so proud to offer such a rare opportunity for our audience to experience this work.”

The title role was performed by Warren Mok, who last thrilled Honolulu opera patrons with his riveting portrayal of Calaf in HOT’s Turandot (2005). Dong-Jian Gong made his HOT stage debut as King Philip II of Spain. Fabiana Bravo appeared in  the role of Elisabetta.
